It’s my birthday week. Which is awesome, everybody loves their birthdays. I was thinking and reflecting the past year, about how fast it went, and how seemingly small our lives seem in the scheme of everything. Modern society is not exactly a healthy place for young minds. We are a generation that risks indifference and emotional anaesthesia, robbed off the possibility of rebellion, and what we desire is an energetic shake of life, an appeal to the truth of beauty. Even if what is beautiful and alive is extinguished in the world, our inclination towards it is not. If we are prevented from attaining, we are not prevented from desiring. The ardour that pushes us young people to earn a living and scorn nullity and monotony and adventure is nearly extinguished.
So much comes to this single question: What is it that makes man, after all truly happy? What is it that makes a human life truly alive? People always come out with statements like “live in the moment”, but what does this mean? I have thought about this in great depth all week. Living in the moment is more than just about going out and having a good time, partying, exercising, having sex, reading a book, eating food, or following your dreams. We often are trapped in the moment because we are fixated on the past, and try and imagine and predict the future: both are dangerous. In the past we are filled with memories both good and bad, and we often focus on them far too much, rethinking about our mistakes, moments we wish we could change, feelings of anger or sadness, regrets. To truly live in the moment, we need to clear our mind of such thoughts and not let our present of the past define who we are in the present. It is a dangerous game to do so. Likewise with the future, we often image how we will feel after a certain event or plan, but rarely do we correctly value our future judgement, often under of over valuing what will eventuate. This too is dangerous. To live in the moment is to truly be enjoying life as it is, for your perception of today is much more clear than it was of yesterday, and of what it will be tomorrow.
This probably all sounds a little crazy and I do not think I have explained what is on my mind very well at all, but if you take one thing from the irrational post, don’t let your past define you, and don’t hold out for future happiness, for the only place you will find real happiness and peace, is right now, today. And when you realize this, life is that much more amazing, J
